SEED is a global partnership for action on sustainable development and the green economy. SEED supports innovative small-scale and locally driven entrepreneurs around the globe who integrate social and environmental benefits into their business model from the outset.
SEED was presented at the Johannesburg World Summit on Sustainable Development in 2002 and registered by UNEP, UNDP and IUCN as a partnership. Since then SEED has grown significantly, awarding over 200 SEED Awards over the world and introducing focus areas such as Africa, Gender and Low Carbon.
Ten years ago, at the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD) in New York, 5 enterprises received the first SEED Awards. They were chosen, from a pool of over 260 entries from 66 countries, for their potential to advance sustainable development in their communities and contribute to the UN’s Millennium Development Goals.
In 2010 establisehd the first country pilot in South Africa. SEED South Africa aims also to create a national community of successful social and environmental entrepreneurs, providing increased business opportunities for the entrepreneurs themselves and for the wider business community.
